How yoga benefits kids and teens or why your children NEED yoga

Today’s world is fast paced, highly stressful and increasingly sedetary. No wonder our kids have more and more health issues so early on in life. Thankfully yoga provides a remedy passed down from the sages to combat these modern concerns.

Yoga was developed through observation and improvement of the connection between body, breath, and mind. Recently, scientific research has begun to document the many positive aspects and health benefits of yoga asana (poses) and pranayama (breath control). These benefits can be seen after just one yoga session, and are augmented with regular practise. Yoga is different from other forms of exercise, stressing quality of movement over quantity. A consistent yoga practice can quiet the mind and invigorate the body, bringing health, relaxation, and happiness. Here is a lovely video from yoga.org.nz helping explain how yoga contributes to overall health and wellness.

Yoga promotes strength, flexibility, good coordination and posture, as well as teaches children how to relax, concentrate, and be quiet and still. Yoga is a gentle, non-competitive form of exercise and can be practiced by children of varying ages and physical abilities without anyone feeling inadequate or inferior. Yoga is not about attaining perfect poses or ‘being the best’ – it is about learning to do what is right for your own body. Success is not measured against others, but against oneself.

The benefits to yoga are extensive. Here are the ones I find most applicable to kids and teens. Yoga…

  • Increases Flexibility
  • Develops Strength & Resiliency
  • Improves Balance
  • Requires Concentration
  • Improves Breathing
  • Raises Body Awareness and Self Image
  • Reduces Stress
  • Is Practical

Yoga helps children learn about their body and how it works. Asanas are fun while providing a challenge, and can be adapted to suit bodies of all ages and physical abilities. Breathing exercises help induce the relaxation response and restore a sense of calm. Properly taught and practiced, yoga provides children with sound physical and mental health, and leads to balanced growth and development. I’m sure the ancient gurus are smiling as we finally realise what an amazing gift they have left for our benefit.
