Last week the Washington Post had this article describing how yoga can bring relief and health to a wide variety of people. They comment on yoga:

  • in schools & colleges

    yoga for every body

    yoga for every body

  • for HIV/AIDS patients
  • for those suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome
  • for eating disorders
  • for the homeless
  • for battered women
  • for pregnant teens
  • for Survivors of Torture or Trauma
  • for depression

Mark Lilly, founder for Street Yoga, who spent three days teaching how to make yoga approachable to all segments of the population, is quoted as saying:

“Empowering people to meet their own needs is one of the biggest things we can do,” Lilly said. “Yoga is just the context.”

I love it! Over the past few years yoga had been actively adapted to meet specific needs, not simply a tool for the fit and flexible. As yoga becomes more mainstream I’m sure we’ll see more and more of its benefits used to meet the demands of the entire population. One of the greatest aspects of yoga is that it is completely adaptable to your current situation. Anyone who can breathe, focus, and move can do yoga, and enjoy a better life because of it.

The Post article ends with this great quote from a teen participant in school:

“I used to think yoga was lame,” said the 15-year-old, who lives in Southeast. “I thought it was for old people.” But now, after four weeks of classes, she has changed her mind. “It feels so good,” she said. “It’s for everybody.”
