Yoga Goes Hollywood: From Elvis to Madonna

Bookmark and Share

Last week I found this fun Elvis video of him singing “Yoga Is as Yoga Does” on the Purveyors of the Obvious site.

What a hoot! I love that he can laugh at himself.

It got me thinking of the long standing connection between celebrities and Yoga. Today its seems most of the “stars” practice yoga (Angelina Joli, Gwenyth Paltrow, Matthew McConaughey, Jeremy Piven, Reese Witherspoon, Evander Holyfield, Nikki Reed, Madonna, Sting, and the entire Lakers team to name but a few).

Why Celebrities Practice Yoga

Relaxation: Most celebrities live stressful lives with many demand on their time and talents. Yoga helps to calm and focus individuals so they can stay true to themselves

Strength: Whether it is to lose weight for an upcoming role or perform at peek physical ability, yoga is an effective training tool. It also is great to retone the body post pregnancy.

Flexibility: Many athletes struggle with their flexibility. As well the moves action stars are asked to perform require intense training. Once again yoga meets these challenges.

Fashion Statement: Everybody else is doing it so they don’t want to be left behind.

Privacy: Yoga can be practiced alone, at home, or in private studios. To those hounded by paparazzi, a complete workout without being harassed for a photo is heaven sent.

The Effects of Celebrities Promoting Yoga

As more and more celebrities talk about their yoga practice and how it has benefited them, yoga and yoga classes become more popularized. Many product sales have shot through the roof, or a certain style of yoga has become all the rage, thanks to celebrity sound bites. Let’s hope, however, that the true benefits of health and vitality are also being passed down.

So keep watching the gossip sheets to see who is doing yoga now. Maybe your favorite celebrity will be hitting the mat soon and inspire you in your yoga practice.
