Congratulations to Kira Willey of Fireflies Yoga for getting her song “Colors” from the CD Dance for the Sun: Yoga Songs for Kids, used in the latest DELL computers ad compaign. How cool is that!

The folks over at Zooglobble were able to track Kira down before the full media frenzy for an interview. Here is what she has to say about it all:

“It has certainly created some buzz. I am absolutely amazed at how many people have written to say they heard the song on the ad and went searching for it on the internet. I’ve been inundated with wonderful emails, people asking for sheet music for the song, and requests for using the song for commercial purposes–for example five separate children’s photographers have asked permission to use it on their websites. And it has spurred CD sales in a big way. All good. The best though by far are the emails from teachers, therapists and parents who have been so happy to discover the CD as a result of hearing the song on the ad…”

And best of all it all sort of happened within 10 days. Just goes to show what a lifetime of doing what you love, and loving what you do, can get you.

For the complete version of the song go to Kira’s orginal video shot by some friends. I love the coloured scarves and how much fun the kids are having.

What color are you today?

  3. Dance for the Sun is one our favorite CDs!! Yeah Kira!!

  4. I love this song. It would be perfect for a yoga class focusing on colors. There are so many great ways to incorporate colors into a kids’ yoga class. I’ve used the different colored cards from a Candyland game for kids to randomly select, find a partner who chose the same color, and for them to think of a yoga pose (either taught or created) that correlates with that color. (Such as green frogs, yellow flowers, pink butterflies, or blue airplanes). The kids are so creative! Another great idea is to play a game using a parachute, instructing the kids to place different body parts on different colors. This game requires focus, listening, and builds balance, strength and flexibility. Lastly, I ask the kids to choose a color block on the parachute for their shavasana. As they are lying down on the color they chose, I read the descriptions of each color from the Yoga Pretzels card deck “Be A Rainbow”, and have them visualizing themselves as that color’s description. Once they are finished relaxing and we are back in our yoga circle, just before our closing song, I give the kids a chance to discuss how they related to their color’s description. It’s a neat way to get the kids to be a little introspective and thoughtful about what makes them who they are. Love all the great ‘color’ themed teaching ideas. Will definitely have to use some of those. I do a quided relaxation which asks kids to imagine their favourite colour. To see the many things which are that colour. Maybe the blue sky, green leaves in spring, yellow daffodiles, red apple, purple sunset, orange pumpkin, brown eye of a loved one, black cat, white sheets blowing on the clothes line. To breathe in their favourite color, exhale all the grey, etc. It really is a wonderful way to spend savasana.

  6. Donna, that is a wonderful idea for savasana! Love it.
