Yoga & What it Takes to Succeed

Yoga & What it Takes to Succeed

success st johnRichard St John presents at TED Talks a 3 minute synopsis of what it takes to succeed. I hope you enjoy this brief overview and will be inspired to better implement these 8 qualities of success and to teach them to the youth and teens in your life.

  • Passion – do what you love
  • Work – work hard, have fun
  • Good – get good at something
  • Focus – find the one thing and go for it
  • Push – physically & mentally, get over your inadequacies and shortcomings
  • Serve – others need something of value, provide it
  • Ideas – listen, observe, be curious, ask questions, problem solve
  • Persist – #1 reason for success, persist through failure, criticism, rejection, assholes & pressure

I love how these 8 traits correspond so beautifully with yogic teachings and philosophy. In yoga you are taught to find and follow your heart, to dedicate yourself to hard work, to strive to better yourself, to focus (a skill honed through asana, pranayama, & meditation), to recognize your limitations - not succumb to them but instead to work at the edge of your ability pushing ever further, to serve others selflessly, to listen intently to your heart and to others, to endure allowing regular practice and constant reflection to guide you on your life journey. I know that as we develop these qualities within ourselves we will be happy, healthy & successful in whatever we do.

You can visit Richard St John’s blog for tips on how to apply these 8  attributes in your everyday life and to see how others are doing these things in order to succeed.

I wish you every success!

Thanks – I hadn’t seen this Ted video. I think we can both relate to the term he used: Work-a-Frolic! It is work, but it is a passion too (and I also like his CRAP acronym).

  2. Wow – such a great tie-in to the general idea of Tapas or Austerity in Patanjali’s niyamas – that of having discipline! Thanks for sharing!!
