Kermit the Frog
is a beloved and classic character created by Muppet master Jim Hansen. He epotimized courage, friendship, undying hope, vulnerability, and love. The trenchcoat and key phrase “Hi, ho, Kermit the Frog here” from his days as a reporter and his acceptance of self in the song Its Not Easy Being Green are key aspect of many adults’ childhood memories. Recently he showed his true yogi colours (green of course) and modeled for the Sun Salutation series.
In honor of that, and to celebrate the anniversary of Sesame Street this month, I had to link to The Rainbow Connection as it is such a great song with an enduring quality and optimistic outlook. I hope that as you listen it will take you back to a simpler time. Share it with a child and help them become a member of the “lovers and dreamers” club. Here are the lyrics if you want to sing along.
RAINBOW CONNECTION
Why are there so many
Songs about rainbows
And what’s on the other side
Rainbow’s are visions
They’re only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide
So we’ve been told and some chose to
Believe it
But I know they’re wrong wait and see
Someday we’ll find it
The Rainbow Connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me
Who said that every wish
Would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star
Somebody thought of that
And someone believed it
And look what it’s done so far
What’s so amazing
That keeps us star gazing
What so we think we might see
Someday we’ll find it
That Rainbow Connection
The lovers the dreamers and me
Have you been half asleep
And have you heard voices
I’ve heard them calling my name
Are these the sweet sounds that called
The young sailors
I think they’re one and the same
I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it
There’s something that I’m supposed to be
Someday we’ll find it
The Rainbow Connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me
Thanks to YogaDork and Yogic Muse (Froggie Inspirations) for showing us the way.

Wow – I just got teary reading this. I remember performing this song in my 2nd grade concert and all the parents crying in the front row. Kermie, you are my inspiration! Miss Piggy still needs a few more yoga classes…
I love Sesame Street! When I was little, I thought Kermit the Frog was real and my family called me “Miss Amy” because I idolized Miss Piggy (and I had blue eyes and blond curls!).
I have some great rainbow yoga class ideas if you feel inspired to do this as a class theme! They include having kids pick out colored cards from a hat (candy land cards work well!), finding another person who picked the same color and having them either create or think of a yoga pose of an object of that color. Use a parachute to make a fun listening and creative movement game, much like Twister (“one foot red, one hand green!”). Finally, have the kids choose a color to lie down on for shavasana, and read the “Be a Rainbow” cards from Yoga Pretzels to them to visualize themselves as that color. Afterwards, discuss any thoughts that came to them in this activity.
Of course, play this song, or “Somewhere over the rainbow” during class!
