Frogs are wonderful creatures with rich symbolic meaning. Often they represent fertility or abundance and prosperity, thanks to the numerous eggs they lay. They also signify re-birth, resurrection, or renewal thanks to the radical transformations they undergo during their life (egg, tadpole, frog). Frogs help us to navigate new opportunities and experiences, and to undergo life’s ever changing situations with peace, trusting in our intuition. So enjoy frog pose and swim through life’s transitions with ease.
I’ve include two versions of frog pose which I use in my classes. The choice is made depending on the students and their mood. If they are calm and relaxed, I’ll do the first and enjoy a great thigh stretch. If they are bouncing off the walls and need a vigorous workout to release some energy, the Kundalini version is used. Please note there are numerous yoga poses called frog pose including Bhekasana and a seated Mandukasana, but I find these two the most kid friendly.
Frog Pose – Mandukasana
- Kneel on all fours in Table position, hands under the shoulders, knees under the hips
- Slide your knees open wide, lowering your torso to place your elbows on the floor
- Rest your head in your hands and try to catch flies with your tongue
benefits: stretches the hips, quadriceps and hamstrings
Frog Pose – Kundalini Version
- Squat on toes, with heels touching, knees spread wide, hands on the floor between the legs
- Look up, straighten arms and inhale (Position 1)
- Exhale as you straighten your legs, head comes down toward the knees (Position 2)
- Return to Position 1 – this equals one round
- Continue repeating for one to two minutes, starting slowly and then increasing the speed before slowing again
benefits: tones the legs, improves heart health, promotes hamstring flexibility
If doing a school unit on frogs you may want to use this short 27 sec video as a quick overview before getting into frog pose.
