Donna, what a fantastic article. I totally agree with everything you say. It is all this and more that allows charm, wonderment and spontaneous group hugs to occur during a Children's Yoga class. :-)

I appreciate this article; A reminder to us teachers and parents that children yoga class offers ups and downs as well. Be always ready for tears. When you are a parent to a little child you will understand the dynamics of a play-time, and yoga playtime is no different. I learned that the great way to keep kids listen is to make up a story and as you all follow the story the whole group act to it changing shapes of their body through out the story's 3 phases: the intro, a (dramatic/exciting) culmination, and a (happy) end. If there is a game and a few songs involved - the better. Kids ages 3-8 will be absorbed in the playtime. 1/2 hour of yoga movement is smoothly done. The relaxation part? They will actually look for it as they are now tired and need time to digest the adventure of the story. I agree, lots of props will give a really nice transition from wrestling with a mate, chatters, distractions, to utilizing it such as building a boat of a few props for example...hoberman spheres? what in the world is that? lol... Namaste!

Hi Donna,

I loved this! From my personal experience teaching children, I can say it is right on! Although the challenges can be many, the joy is worth it all.

I would be interested to know more about how you use these props in your classes.

Thanks again for all you do for all of us who teach yoga to children.
