Meet Buzz. “Buzz is a curious little bee” and he wants to “bee a yogi.” To help him on his way, four friends (Dog, Cow, Cat and Frog) teach him their favourite poses. This is the idea behind Buzz Learns Yoga! by Kami Evans & Jackie Y. Lee, the creative duo who strive to make yoga fun, interactive and meaningful to little yogis. Inspired by her daughter Hannah, Kami Evans became a certified kids yoga instructor with a specialty in yoga for children with special needs. (Read her story.) She founded Elahi Yoga as a way to enrich all lives through creative movement and yoga.
Buzz was launched into the world in Buzz Learns Yoga! There are a number of things I like about this sweet, little book. First it’s short and ideally suited to the attention spans of young children. Second it’s colour rich as each animal/pose has an assigned colour (Cat = Orange, Frog = Green) which reinforces the poses in a visually appealing manner. Third, even though Buzz is the newest kid in yoga class he also has something to teach the more experienced yogis. The lesson ‘that everyone has something to offer’ is one we all need to incorporate into our lives.
The Elahi Yoga Student Workbook is another fab resource for pre-school children. Following the alphabet, animals are used as the basis for yoga inspired movements and poses: B for BEAR, N for NIGHTINGALE, U for UNICORN and 23 others. Each page has an animal to colour, letters to trace to spell the animals name and instructions on how to perform the pose. At the end of the workbook are a number of pages with fill in the blanks and creative drawing & writing to further enrich your little one’s understanding and integration of the concepts and ideas. This is a perfect example of how yoga develops early literacy skills.

I co-taught a kids yoga camp with 18 little yogis, ages 4-8. The camp was for five days, three hours each afternoon. We read a book every day and created yoga poses according to the story. The camp focused on Yoga Around the World and on the day we “visited” Egypt, we read Skippy John Jones in Mummy Trouble and the kids loved doing sphinx and camel. I wish I could paste a photo of the kids into this box…
Our favorite pose in our house is downward facing dog. I often see my boys in the pose. When I ask they always respond….Downward Facing Dog….I’m a puppy…watch me wag my tail. It is cute to see a 3 and 5 year doing yoga…on their own.
Frog is definitely a favorite. Especially if jumping from lilypad to lilypad is involved!
We have two favorite yoga poses at our house! For my 3-year old, three-legged dog is an all time favorite. And, for my 7 month old, snake! We roll out our yoga mats and have some fun whenever we can…lately we’ve been doing our yoga outside. Gotta love summer
I teach kids yoga, so I usually try out things with my 4yr old son before using them in class. He likes to sit in lotus pose and “breathe in a big breath”. He also likes backpack pose and anything he can do with a partner.
My girls favorite animal pose is snake althought she does often stop in the middle of where ever we are and do tree (I know it’s not an animal – but still lovely to see her doing it!)
Liked elahi on facebook.
My one year old and three yr old both love down dog. They try all sorts of one legged down dog combinations as well! These books look fabulous!
My son *loves* tree pose but his favorite animal pose is frog pose! He frog hops up stairs and whenever he sees squatting he asks if we can “catch flies” (what I call twisting in a squat)
My two year old daughter has so many favorite animal yoga poses that it’s hard to narrow it down. She has always loved downward facing dog and dinosaur pose. She comes with me often to teach toddler and kids classes and now tries to teach me poses outside of class!
I liked Elahi Yoga on Facebook!
I have had the pleasure of getting into local schools and bringing yoga to the kids there. I am always interested in seeing what other people are doing in the schools! So many great ideas and so much fun!
This is awesome! One of my students is obsessed with butterfly pose. We pretend we are flying all over and sing Fly Like a Butterfly.
I liked Elahi Yoga on facebook!
Grace likes the cat/cow combination. Especially when she sticks her leg out like a tail!

Definitely frog! My tiny Rockstar is in non-stop squat position now that he has mastered it.
I incorporate yoga in my creative dance teaching as well as at home. Some of my students favorite animal poses are downward dog and snake. At home, my son’s favorite animal pose is eagle and my daughter loves to do the butterfly pose and then dance around.
My kids love the lion pose- sticking out there tongues and roaring. They also love the frog pose and jumping on lily pads.
I also like Elahi on the facebook.
My daughter really love fish pose and downward dog- plus some she usually makes up each time we do yoga.
My kids love doing frog pose and jumping from lilypad to lilypad. This is always requested. Soooooooo cute!
I love teaching yoga to young children! My daughter’s favorite pose is downward dog. She thinks she is a puppy anyway. Her favorite game to play is downward dog house.
My little yogis love the butterfly pose and Yogini Went to Sea song which incorporates hand motions to develop both sides of the brain. My madality is based on the Radiant Child Program. I am certified in all 3 levels.
Great website! My daughter likes to be a caterpillar.
we love headstands over here and any “pose” that includes rolling up in our mats.
My kindergarteners love butterfly!
