Jungle Yoga – Oh Yeah!

Having visited the Amazon rainforest while living in Brazil many years ago I was excited to receive a copy of Sophia’s Jungle Adventure by Giselle Shardlow. Flipping through it quickly, I loved the colorful illustrations and the corresponding inset yoga pose on each page. Upon further reading, I found a creative, interactive, educational book perfect for 3-8 year olds.

sophia's jungle adventure canoe poseSophia’s Jungle Adventure has an eco-friendly theme great for use in classrooms. This book is a fabulous way to learn about the rainforest and incorporate yoga poses (hooray for kineasthetic learning). Giselle also provides 20 ways to jazz up your jungle journey on her website.

The pre-school groups (ages 2-5) I teach loved the book. Their favorite poses were Alligator and Monkey. Which was perfect as we played 5 Little Monkeys after reading the book through twice (the first time to familiarize ourselves with the story line, the second time adding in the yoga poses). This twice through sequence is recommended in the useful Parent-Teacher Guide at the back of the book.

Giselle has done a wonderful job of combining her educational expertise, enthusiasm for yoga and love of children into a useable and enjoyable children’s yoga book. I will get lots of use out of Sophia’s Jungle Adventure and can’t wait for next Kids Yoga Stories book about the Australian beach.

Enjoy this FREE Sun Salutes coloring page from Kids Yoga Stories.

Purchase your own copy of Sophia’s Jungle Adventures for $15.95. Also available on Amazon.

My favorite rainforest animal is the Elephant. Standing in warrior one, hands clasped and extended for a long trunk. The elephant can fold over and drink water and then splash it back.

Liked Kids Yoga Stories on facebook :)

  2. Brittany says:

My favorite animals are monkeys. Happy baby pose reminds me of a monkey relaxing in the shade, rolling side to side, hands to feet.

  3. Brittany says:

And I have ‘liked’ Kids Yoga Stories on Facebook :)

  4. Betty says:

I am a preschool yoga teacher in NJ. I have liked Kids Yoga Stories on Facebook AND shared this review and the link on my Facebook Page Be Yoga Be Love. Thanks for this review, the book seems like a wonderful resource to use in my classes!! My favorite rain forest yoga pose is the Monkey because he swings his arms overhead reaching for the sky doing sun salutations and then swings from tree to tree looking for bananas!

  5. Laura says:

I’ve liked Kids yoga Stories on Facebook!

  6. Sarah B. says:

Who doesn’t like a monkey?! The kids have fun squatting down, and using their hands and arms to “bang” on their chests. All the while making the monkey sounds.

  7. Denise says:

How about a rain forest frog? From a squatting position such as garland pose, place both hands on the floor, and hop from mat to mat (lily pad to lily pad). Ribbit, ribbit, ribbit…

  8. Diane says:

My favorite rainforest animal is the sloth. Standing in tree pose start to move as slowly as possible with out losing balance. Bend forward to touch your toes, squat, and lay back into savasana!
