Mindfulness means “the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgementally to the unfolding of experiences moment by moment.” (Joh Kabat-Zinn) It is an active process involving staying aware of the external environment and the internal bodily sensations in the present moment without judgement, positive or negative.

Children live in a world of being told what to do: what time to wake up, what to eat, where and when they have various activities such as school, sports, music lessons, etc. This can lead to going through the motions of living without conscious awareness. For example, if you ask them what they ate for lunch they may not be able to tell you. This in not simply because of poor memory, but more likely because they were not paying attention at the time.

Children are often much closer to their experiences than adults. Watch an infant experience anything for the first time; they look at it, touch it, feel it on their face, taste it. Every experience is fresh and new. They live in the moment reacting emotionally and immediately to stimulus, then moving on to the next experience.

However, children also exists on auto-pilot, are easily distracted, are forgetful, lack concentration, have poor self-control and often do not understand themselves or the world. Mindfulness exercises address these concerns and can assist children in living with attention and awareness of themselves and their environment.

Keeping the needs and abilities of children in mind is key when adapting mindfulness exercises to various age groups. Children learn through concrete activities with clear, descriptive instructions. They also enjoy engaging their imaginations and creativity. And don’t forget the power of humour or the need for play.

Be sure to start with brief activities which will lead to success. Beginning with a five minute focus activity will be better than a 15 minute seated meditation.

Like all activities, mindfulness training improves with practice. As they learn mindful techniques, children can practice independently in everyday life: as they walk, as they eat, as they play. Purposefully engaging in their various activities will actively shape the mind helping children to live deeply each moment of daily life.

In the coming months we’ll be posting specific techniques and methods of teaching mindfulness to children and adolescents. Be sure to subscribe (RSS or e-mail) to receive these articles as they are published.

Bringing out a bag of colorful soft feathers adds instant excitement to yoga class. Feathers allow kids to see the breath, add a fun twist to bird poses of any kind, and make for some fun yoga games! Feathers can even make savasana more special.

Pranayama Practice

Even the youngest of yogis can become more aware of breath and the connection between breath and emotions. Simply holding a feather in front of your nose during kid-pranayama practice (which might consist of Bunny Breath to energize or Take Five Breath to calm down) makes breath visible. Try blowing soft enough to move the fluffy part of the feather and then hard enough to move the stiff part of the feather. Can you see your feather move, fast or slow, depending on how you’re breathing? How does “fast” breath make you feel? How does “slow” breath make you feel? Practice Ujjayi breath by holding the feather under your nose and keeping your lips sealed like an envelope.

Floating Feather Game

Celebrate the power of breath by playing this game with yourself or a friend. Using only your breath (no fingers or toes), keep your feather afloat. Don’t let it touch the floor! Try playing a little feather-volleyball with a friend.

Find the Feather Game

“Find the Feather,” is an intuition game. Invite one yogi to be the “seeker”, and ask her to hide in the corner of the room, with no peeking. Then, hide the feather under another yogi’s mat. Invite the seeker back and ask her to guess where the feather is hiding. Talk about what it means to “go with your gut” and use your intuition. You’d be amazed how many times the yogi will find the feather on the first or second try!

Bird Asanas

Feathers make learning our bird poses even more fun. Hand out feathers when working on Eagle pose or Flamingo. Let the kids be inspired to feel the source of their asanas even more fully given the feathers. Decorate your pigeon with a feather or two or allow your swan to ruffle its feathers in movement.

Savasana

Feathers are great to use during savasana/ relaxation. You can give your savasana-students “Feather Massages.” As always, ask kids if they want to be touched. (I have students put a thumb up in the air during savasana if they want an adjustment or massage.) Lightly move the feather across the third-eye area. Kids will lie really still in anticipation of a feather massage, so this helps in savasana management! You can also gently place a feather on the belly or chest during savasana so there is an awareness of how breath effects the body when it enters and leaves. You may even want to place several feathers around each relaxing yogi and lead the class through a “Bed of Feathers” guided visualization. All of these techniques keep young yogis more still during savasana time.

Let your imagination soar as you and your students invent even more ways to use feathers in yoga class! Even hanging some feathers in the yoga space can act as a constant reminder of this important, but invisible, part of the yoga practice. Breathe deep, and let the feathers fly!

Hooray! The long lazy days of summer have arrived. After having successfully completed another school year you can’t wait to spend time doing nothing. It is important to allow kids unstructured time to renew, refresh and come to know themselves. However, more often than not, sometime during the next few months children will utter the words, “I’m bored. There’s nothing to do!” (add whiny voice as appropriate). Here are some suggestions to keep kids active mentally and physically which also nurture them emotionally. Remember summer is a wonderful time to build relationships by spending time playing, doing, and growing together.

Have family members set summer goals. For example: list of books you want to read, things you want to do, places to visit, skills you need to learn.

Take your child to the library and sign up for a summer reading program.

Have your child help put together a first aid kit that can go with you on your many summer outings.

Give your child an inexpensive camera and let them take pictures of all the fun activities you do over the summer. Create a scrapbook of memories.

Practice pranayama by blowing bubbles or dandelion heads.

Pack a picnic and enjoy eating outdoors.

Watch a baseball/football/soccer/beach volleyball game together. Talk about the rules and how they are important.

See how many places in your home (not including books) where your child can find words to read.

Make paper airplanes and practice airplane pose (Warrior III with arms out to the side).

Plant a garden and enjoy tending it throughout the season.

Visit a local museum or art gallery.

Sketch or paint outdoors: clouds, night sky, trees, a favourite view, an interesting building…let your imagination and creativity soar.

Lie on the grass and look at the clouds. Make up stories about the shapes you see.

Colour mandalas. Go for a walk and find mandalas in your neighbourhood (flowers, signs, art, stepping stones, etc).

Learn geography while watching the World Cup. Find participating countries on a map.

Teach your child their personal information: phone number, address, etc. Practice each day.

Can your children tell time? Teach them how to read an analog clock with yoga eyes.

Check out a book of jokes or riddles. Share one over dinner each day.

Create an indoor or outdoor miniature golf course. Play a round or two.

Grab a broomstick and hold a limbo contest. Back-bends open the heart and invigorate the body.

Add food coloring to a dollop of shaving cream. Let your child use it as finger paint.

Make homemade ice-cream. Practice two scoops partner pose.

Help your child write a letter or card to a relative or friend telling about summer events.

Fly a kite. Practice triangle pose (sometimes called kite pose).

Have a pillow fight.

Enjoy face painting and then perform face yoga in the mirror and laugh at your funny faces.

Read under the stars. Take a blanket and book outside and read with your child by flashlight.

At dinner have each family member say something nice about every person at the table.

Make puppets out of a paper bag, an old sock or a stick. Put on a puppet show.

Cut out pictures from several magazines. Have your child write a story about them.

Give your child a bucket of water and some paint brushes. Let her “paint” the sidewalk, fence, house, etc.

Find out when the sun sets and rises in your area. Learn how to do Sun Salutations.

Look at the stars with your child. Make up new constellations together.

Find a local kiddie pool, beach or fountain and go wadding.

Play alphabet games with your child. List countries, animals, cars or yoga poses in alphabetical order.

Build a fort inside or out using blankets, sheets, boxes, tables, chairs and other items found around the house.

Meditate upon the breeze as it ruffles the leaves of your favourite tree.

Create a treasure/scavenger hunt and help your kids follow the clues for a fun reward.

Play hopscotch.

Choose a new recipe. Have fun cooking with your child.

Cut out pictures of healthy foods from weekly grocery ads.

Discuss the Food Pyramid. Have your child use the pictures from the above activity and make a chart of nutritious choices.

Look at family photos. Share stories and remember wonderful moments together.

Play with a hula hoop and discover hoop yoga.

Make musical instruments from things around your house. Have a concert.

Play a card game with your child; Crazy 8s, War, Rummy, Old Maid, Go Fish, Snap all build memory, hand-eye coordination & math skills.

Collect bugs and do insect poses such as locust, spider, inchworm, bumble bee lips, etc.

Relaxation is essential. Learning to relax is key to a healthy lifestyle, stress relief, and knowing oneself. Children today are over-stimulated, over-programmed, and often have no idea what true relaxation looks or feels like. I often encourage educators, parents, health professionals and youth leaders that if nothing else from all that yoga has to offer for children, please, please teach the children in your life how to relax.

For all of you who have attended my workshop Once Upon a Pose, this short guided visualization will bring back wonderful memories of the last few minutes we spent together exploring the world of children’s yoga. My Favourite Colour is the guided visualization included at the back of the FREE e-book The Pet Store/L’animalerie, which you can download by entering your name and e-mail in the right side bar.

So close your eyes, sit back, and breathe.

Many more guided visualizations for relaxation which are easy to do with children are included in the book Once Upon a Pose: A Guide to Yoga Adventure Stories for Children, Chapter #6: Relaxation.

I hope you have a wonderful day filled with light, vitality and energy. Namaste.

I love spring! It’s my favourite season. Finally the long, dark, cold days of winter have been left behind, the earth begins to awaken, the first flowers burst from the ground to brighten each new dawn.

This year spring was late, very late, in arriving to Alberta. In fact, it snowed on May 30th. Insane country that I live in. Now, however, everyone is rushing around trying to get their gardens in before it is too late. You see our growing season may be short (June to September) but with 16-18 hours of daylight in June and July (yes, the sun sets around 10:00-10:30 and rises about 4:30-5:00) and rich fertile soil, things grow well.

Every year I anxiously look forward to digging around in my garden plot. My children are each given a section to cultivate and enjoy the trip to the green house to select their flowers and vegetables. Last year my son grew a salsa garden filled with tomatoes, onions, peppers and cilantro. My girls often get distracted by beautiful flowers but also like to throw in some brocolli, spinach, and carrots. Then for about one or maybe two weeks they water it faithfully and daily check to see if anything has grown. Just when they are about to lose interest the first green shoots emerge through the soil.

I love to take this time to teach them about what needs to happen under the surface before you can see the results. It’s much like life. Change and personal growth doesn’t usually begin on the outside. It has to take root, to germinate deep inside of us long before we can see any visible differences. Some seeds take a while and you can’t rush them. However, if they are a good seed and you tend them carefully, providing adequate water and sunshine and fertile growing conditions, then the seeds will flourish and grow to bear beautiful flowers and delicious fruit.

So dig in, plants seeds, and watch in amazement at the growth which results.

A great site with tips and how to’s for getting kids into gardening is Gardening with Kids.

Children benefit greatly from learning basic breathing techniques. This particular exercise helps to calm children through focusing on lengthening their inhalations and exhalations. It will also help to reduce stress, improve oxygen intake, and provide a refuge from a sometimes chaotic world.

When speaking with a special education expert he mentioned that this technique is self-employed by many of his students when they are feeling worked up. They simply say, “I’m gonna Take 5″ and retire to a quiet corner to spend a few minutes breathing and calming down. In this way children learn to recognize stressful situations and find a more productive way to dealing with the stress than thru tantrums, panic, aggression or meltdowns.

I will often use Take 5 at the beginning of a yoga class to teach how to take a complete breath and to prepare all participants for their yoga practice. Once children have learned this breathing technique, a simple reminder “How about you Take 5″ is often all that is needed for them to realise their emotions are taking over and they need to remember to breathe.

Take 5

Sit comfortably. Lift one finger at a time as you breathe in through your nose and count in your mind: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Pause for a second. As you exhale, count backward (5, 4, 3, 2, 1) putting down a finger for each number. Repeat 2 or 3 times.

At first younger children may find it very difficult to count all the way to five, so start with counting to three and build from there. Kids may also find it hard to control the exhale, wanting it to explode out, instead of gradually releasing the breath. Keep trying and Take 5 will get easier with practice.

Question: What techniques do you use to help your children to handle stressful situations, meltdowns and tantrums? How do you handle the same situations?

Yoga In My School has invited a number of kids yoga experts to share their favourite yoga prop and how they use it. If you are interested in submitting an article for this series please e-mail donna@yogainmyschool.com.

Amy Bevan (The PranaMama) enjoys using small, smooth, shiny stones in her kids yoga classes. These stones can easily be found at dollar stores, discount garden supply stores and craft stores. They are relatively inexpensive but are one of the heavier yoga props to cart around. “Magic stones” are a wonderful way to celebrate Earth Day and connect with our planet.

Amy suggests using them in this manner:

While the small, smooth, shiny stones are a great play object for the tactile learner, the larger ones can also benefit kids who have a hard time settling down at night or simply relaxing after a busy activity.

In my pre-school yoga classes, I used these stones during Savasana, or the relaxation phase of class. Once lying down with their eyes closed, I would lead a guided visualization. (Visit Magic Stones Help Calm Kids for an example.)

I would then pass out a magic stone to each child. I remind them that this is their magic stone to keep, and by holding it in their hand, they can be transformed to the meadow, and to a feeling of peace and relaxation. I suggest they can keep it in their pocket, their backpack or by their bedside. Most kids are thrilled and want to compare theirs to the other children, and immediately share where they plan to keep it.

It’s amazing how a small, simple object can represent rest and relaxation, as well as peace and security, to a child. You could also make up your own story about the stone and its magic powers. I gave my own daughter a magic stone during a period of being afraid to go to sleep without one of her parents lying down with her, telling her it was a magic stone that would keep her safe and warm at night, helping her to fall asleep peacefully. She would hold it tightly in her hand and allow us to leave her at bedtime. My husband enjoyed more time together, instead of one of us spending the evening in the dark, waiting for her to fall asleep. Everyone wins!

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) will benefit from yoga since it addresses both the physical and emotional symptoms of the disorder.

The typical gross motor delay, low muscle tone and impaired coordination of ASD often result in low self-esteem and lack of confidence which can extend to other areas of life. Yoga is an appropriate and enjoyable physical program which improves strength and tone in the muscles, develops balance, and increases body awareness. Even fine motor skills will be improved as yoga emphasizes being in tune with the entire body, hands and fingers, feet and toes.

Children with ASD may also suffer from sensory issues including sensitivity to light, noise, taste, texture, or smell. Furthermore, they may repeat movements that seem uncontrollable (stim behaviours). Yoga can help with these symptoms by soothing the nervous system and allowing pent-up energy to be released from the body in a non-competitive, peaceful manner.

The breathing techniques and guided visualization exercises also assist by reducing stress, teaching coping techniques, and providing a sense of calm and acceptance. Once a child has learned some of these exercises they can use them anytime, anywhere.

When teaching yoga, take things slowly, introducing poses incrementally as comfort levels allow. Work on basic poses (Mountain, Tree, Cat, Warrior, etc.) and breathing exercises. Build one pose at a time, gradually adding more options.

To create visual stimulation and connections, line up stuffed animals or pictures of animals at the front of the room. Follow the line of animals, doing the pose for each in turn, creating an effective pattern. A similar exercise is to place the stuffed animals or pictures in a pile and have them picked at random, doing the corresponding pose each time.

Music is also a powerful tool for children with ASD because it provokes engagement and interest. Drumming, chanting, singing and moving to music are effective ways to engage individuals and helps to stimulate the emotional center of the brain.

A fantastic resource for teachers or parents wanting to use yoga for children with ASD is Yoga For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder by Dion E. Betts.
